Using a washing machine may seem simple, but the compartments of your washing machine can be confusing. Where does the detergent actually go? And what do you do with the laundry perfume and fabric softener? In this article, we delve into the world of washing machine compartments. Discover how to get the most out of every wash and keep your clothes fresh and clean. Read on to learn where each product belongs!

The detergent compartment

The detergent compartment is usually the largest compartment and is often located on the left. This is where you put your detergent, whether it is powder or liquid. Always follow the dosage instructions on the packaging for the correct amount, depending on the size of your wash and how dirty the laundry is.

Some washing machines have multiple compartments in the detergent compartment, indicated by symbols or numbers:

  • I of 1: Prewash detergent: Only use this if you are running a prewash program for extra dirty laundry.
  • II of 2: Main wash detergent: This is where you put your normal detergent for the main wash.
  • III, * or flower symbol: Fabric softener. This compartment is for liquid fabric softener.

The compartment for fabric softener

The fabric softener compartment is usually located to the right of the detergent compartment. It often has a flower symbol or a star (*). Pour the recommended amount of liquid fabric softener into this compartment. Be careful not to exceed the maximum indication, otherwise it can foam and stain your clothes.

Fabric softener ensures that your laundry feels nice and soft and smells fresh. It is not absolutely necessary, but it is nice for towels and bed linen, for example. Use it sparingly for sportswear, swimwear and functional clothing, because fabric softener can reduce the breathability and wicking effect.

The drum

The drum is the large, round part where you put your clothes. Make sure you don't overload the washing machine, so that the clothes have enough space to move around and get cleaned properly.

Tip: Always read the washing label on your clothes and sort your laundry by colour and fabric type before washing.

Where do you put laundry perfume?

Laundry perfume gives your clothes a lovely fresh scent. But where exactly should you put it? The answer is simple: in the fabric softener compartment! Laundry perfume is added at the same time during the washing cycle. The use of fabric softener is not necessary when using laundry perfume.

Tip: Always read the instructions on the packaging of your detergent, fabric softener and laundry perfume. Some products may have specific instructions for use in your type of washing machine.

Other compartments and boxes

Some washing machines have additional compartments or pockets for specific purposes:

  • A separate compartment for liquid detergent: Some models have a removable compartment for liquid detergent that you can place directly in the drum.
  • A bleach compartment: If your washing machine has a bleach compartment, use it only for white clothes and follow the bleach instructions carefully.

By placing each product in the correct compartment and following the instructions on the packaging, you will ensure an optimal wash and extend the life of your washing machine and clothes.

Other useful tips

  • Don't use too much detergent. Too much detergent can cause build-up in your washing machine and on your clothes.
  • For best results, use liquid detergent, especially when washing at low temperatures.
  • Experiment with different laundry perfume scents until you find your favorite.
  • Clean your detergent drawer regularly to prevent detergent and bacteria build-up.

Now that you know where everything goes in your washing machine, you are ready to do your laundry with confidence. Enjoy your wonderfully clean and nice smelling clothes!
