Removing limescale in the bathroom: 5 tips

Limescale: What is it and how do you recognize it?

Limescale is formed when water with a high lime content, also known as hard water, dries and leaves behind lime particles. These lime particles adhere to surfaces and over time form a stubborn layer.


You can recognise limescale by the following characteristics:

  • White or gray spots on taps, tiles and sanitary ware
  • Dry, flaky layer on shower doors or walls

How do you remove limescale?

The most important thing is to clean your bathroom regularly. This is the basis for preventing and removing limescale. Make it a habit to dry the tiles and taps thoroughly with a towel or squeegee after every shower. This prevents water from drying and leaving limescale.

Use hot water

Removing limescale in the bathroom is best done with boiling hot water. For example, you can fill a plant sprayer with boiling water and vinegar. Use the 50/50 gauge, so half a litre of water in combination with half a litre of cleaning vinegar. Spray this on the limescale stains and let it soak in for half an hour. After half an hour, wipe it clean with water and a clean cloth.

Coke

There is a surprisingly simple and affordable way to remove limescale: cola! Cola contains phosphoric acid, an ingredient that is effective at dissolving limescale. The acid in cola reacts with the limescale particles, loosening them and making them easier to remove.

  1. Pour cola into a bowl or bucket, enough to completely submerge the affected area.
  2. Place the calcified items, such as a shower head or faucet, in the Coke and let them soak for a few hours or overnight, depending on the severity of the limescale.
  3. Remove the items from the Coke and gently scrub them with an old toothbrush or sponge to remove loose limescale.
  4. Rinse the items thoroughly with water to remove all cola residue.

  • Use sugar-free cola to avoid leaving sticky residue.
  • Test the Coke on a small, inconspicuous area first to make sure it won't damage the surface.
  • For stubborn limescale, you may need to repeat the process or soak the items in the cola for longer.

Soda

Baking soda, also known as sodium carbonate, is a versatile, naturally occurring cleaning agent. It is an effective descaler that tackles stubborn limescale. Baking soda is not only environmentally friendly, but also gentle on your bathroom surfaces, making it a safe choice for regular use.

Steps to remove limescale with baking soda

  1. Make a paste by mixing baking soda with a small amount of water.
  2. Apply the soda paste to areas with limescale, such as your shower head, taps and tiles.
  3. Allow the paste to work for approximately 15-30 minutes, depending on the severity of the limescale.
  4. Use an old toothbrush or a scouring pad to gently scrub away the limescale.
  5. Rinse the surfaces thoroughly with water and dry with a clean cloth

Vinegar

Vinegar is also a natural descaler that is very effective in removing limescale. The acid in vinegar reacts with the limescale and dissolves it, making it easy to remove. In addition, vinegar is safe and environmentally friendly.

  1. Fill a spray bottle with equal parts water and vinegar.
  2. Spray the solution liberally on the affected surfaces, such as the faucet, shower head and tiles.
  3. Allow the vinegar solution to work for 15-30 minutes, depending on the severity of the limescale.
  4. Use an old toothbrush or scouring pad to remove the loosened limescale.
  5. Rinse the surfaces thoroughly with water and dry with a clean cloth.
